Paper-Covered Bare is a type of wire commonly used in electrical applications, especially in motors, transformers, and other electromagnetic devices.
Insulating Material:
The insulating material shall be rope paper, kraft paper, or both. The paper covering shall be one or more tape layers wrapped firmly, closely, evenly, and continuously around the wire.
Paper-Covered Bare Wire: Paper-covered wire, on the other hand, uses a paper insulation layer. This type of insulation is usually made of high-grade cellulose paper that provides good dielectric strength but may not offer the same level of durability and resistance to environmental factors as film insulation.
Thermal Class: 105 impregnated or in oil. The thermal class of fibrous-covered or paper tape–wrapped wire shall be based on experience.
The end point chosen for purposes of this publication is 20,000 hours. This means that the graph of the test data obtained when following the test procedure given in ASTM D 2307 must show an extrapolated life for the wire of 20,000 hours or more at or above the thermal class rating.
Aluminum Conductor Diameter:
AWG Size | Mandrel Size |
8-24 AWG | Min:0.505mm-3.231mm |
Nominal: 0.511mm-3.264mm | |
Max: 0.516mm-3.287mm |
For covering, for wire having two or three layers (N) and tape thickness of 0.051-0.076 mm.
Fibrous coverings shall be wrapped firmly, closely, evenly, and continuously around the wire. When more than one tape covering is applied, adjacent tapes shall be permitted to be wound in the same or in opposite directions. The relation of the percentage of overlap of the tape to the number of layers of tape is shown as follows:
Wrap Description | Number of Tape Layers (N) |
Percentage of Overlap | |
0 | n |
Greater than 0 to 25 | 1.33n |
Greater than 25 to 33 | 1.5n |
Greater than 33 to 40 | 1.67n |
Greater than 40 to 50 | 2n |
Greater than 50 to 67 | 3n |
Greater than 67 to 75 | 4n |
Adherence And Flexibility: No openings sufficient to expose the bare or film-insulated conductor when wound on the following mandrel:
AWG Size | Mandrel Size |
8-13.5 | 5d |
14-22.5 | 4d |
23-24 | 3d |
No openings sufficient to expose the bare wire after elongation
as follows:
AWG Size | Elongation Method |
8-13.5 | 15% (+2, -0) |
14-22.5 | 10% (+2, -0) |
23-24 | 8% (+2, -0) |
Elongation: Not less than 28%

Versatile Applications: Class 105 Paper-Covered Bare Round Aluminum Wire finds applications in a wide range of electrical devices and systems, including motors, transformers, generators, and other electromagnetic devices where reliable and efficient electrical conduction is essential.
Paper-Covered Bare Wire: Paper-covered wire has an outer layer of paper that covers the bare aluminum wire. This paper covering provides additional protection and insulation but may be susceptible to damage from moisture and other environmental factors.
